Old Comic Book Style Enhanced in "Adam Among the Gods"
Gary Scott Beatty was surprised at the initial reaction to his done-in-one, short story comic book "Adam Among the Gods," but that reaction convinced him to take the book to another level.
"Artist James Lyle and I were going for a beefed up '60s look for 'Adam,' because the plot of the book is based on turning old science fiction conventions upside down. It turns out publishers didn't understand the concept and rejected the book at first glance because they thought it looked too dated!"
Beatty then set to work framing the comic book as a book within the pages of "Adam Among the Gods." "The supposedly dated artwork becomes a comic within the comic, lying on the grass on a summer day."
The concept is not just tagged on, Beatty said. The book in the grass itself allowed him to attach a surprise kick at the end, much like the '60s science fiction short stories "Adam Among the Gods" reflects.
In "Adam Among the Gods," the lead character is an ugly, deformed creature surrounded by a race of beautiful, immortal humans. Adam was an early mistake by geneticists before they perfected the process that lead to a perfect world.
Lyle's clean artwork style has been appreciated by fellow illustrators. DC artist Jackson "Butch" Guice said, "Lyle's bold, streamlined graphics are a genuine delight, harkening back to another near forgotten era of our craft when the flow of sequential panel storytelling, not pseudo-photo realism, was the primary goal of each and every comic illustrator."
