"Adam Among the Gods" Brings Science Fiction Into the Modern Age

Gary Scott Beatty, writer of the short story comic book "Adam Among the Gods," eagerly devoured works by classic science fiction writers of the '60s, but he's the first to admit that jet packs and shining cities of concrete are of no interest to today's comic book readers. His "Adam" book, he said, takes classic science fiction concepts, turns them inside out and incorporates new science to create fiction for a modern age.

"Science fiction took a downturn with the advent of home computers," said Beatty. "It just wasn't exciting to read about people clicking on a keyboard. But there're some emerging concepts today that are filled with possibilities for writers, like genetics."

In "Adam Among the Gods," the lead character is an ugly, deformed creature surrounded by a race of beautiful, immortal humans. Adam was an early mistake by geneticists before they perfected the process that lead to a perfect world.

"The story is laced with modern cynicism," said Beatty, "But those great, past science fiction writers knew they needed to ask big questions, and "Adam' does that, too. What is beauty, and who gets to decide what it is? What are the psychological ramifications of belonging to an undying society of perfect humans? What must it be like to be the only troll among all of this perfection?"

The done-in-one short story comic book was drawn in a revised, old comic book style by acclaimed alternative comics illustrator James Lyle. Beatty then took those drawings to another level of reality. "You're actually reading a comic within a comic."
